January 25th

Thanks for assisting your child with the homework they had last weekend with the Place Value Scavenger Hunt.   Over the next couple of months we will continue to send a few of these home as it is an excellent review of place value.  Just so you know we do consider $3.48 as a 3 in the hundreds, 4 in the tens and 8 in the ones (we discussed this in class as it is a bit confusing) - we encourage the children to think of pennies as the ones, dimes as the tens and loonies as the hundreds.

Also just a reminder to keep a look out for your child's spelling book on Wednesday as they need to complete both sides of their lesson.  If you know that Wednesday isn't a good night to do home work just ask your child to bring it home on Monday or Tuesday.  It's just important that they have it completed before Thursday so they can practice their words for Friday.  Thanks!

A notice about head lice screening went home this week.  You were only suppose to return the form if you did not want your child to participate.  Many people however were confused and returned it anyways so if you did return your form but did not circle the NO your child WILL participate in the screening.  I was notified that a student in Div. 9 was found with nits just yesterday so I am really hope that you are all okay with the screening.  Thanks to our PAC for providing this service.

Yesterday we read an amazing book called 'The Invisible Boy', have your child talk about it with you.  We talked about whether they have ever felt invisible like Brian did.  In the afternoon we created a scene of compassion with loose parts.  Below are just a couple of the great creations!
We are using this book as the launch into our compassion unit that we will soon be starting in the library with Mrs. Neufeld and also Mrs. Roberts' class.

Scholastic is due on Monday.  Many students said they still hoped to purchase books so I extended the deadline.

Today Dan (the recycling man) came to our class and did a very interesting presentation on 2 Canadian animals that live near us.  Ask your child about this and all that they learned.  Below are a couple of pictures - as you can see it was exciting and engaging for the students.

Just a reminder there is no school tomorrow for students.   Hope you have a good long weekend.

January 19th

Spelling has started this week.  You should have received a letter on white paper explaining our spelling program.  As you hopefully have noticed the children write their list of words in their planner on Monday.  If by Wednesday they have not completed the lesson that accompanies each word list they will be bringing it home for homework.  We thought this way you can finish up the assignment on Wednesday and then practice and study the words on Thursday so they are ready for the quiz on Friday.  I will only be giving them 5 words from the list and then 1/2 bonus words which follow the same phonic sound that we are studying.  On the blog I have also added to our useful links - Spelling City.  On this website I have added our list words and there are a variety of activities and games that the students can play using each week's words.  ***Just a note that next week we will have the quiz on Thursday as Friday, Jan. 26th is a pro d day and there is no school for students.

In their poetry book this weekend we have included a place value scavenger hunt.  If you could help your child to complete this for Monday that would be great!  Thanks.

New Just Right Reading came home this week.  Please help your child remember that they need to bring their JRR to school every day as we often use them.  Thanks.  Also could everyone please check their homes for any classroom books - it seems that many are not making it back or even out of the backpacks.

Scholastic was sent home today.  Please remember I can not accept cash.  Please make cheques out to Scholastic or pay on-line.

We have one more skating booked for Tuesday, February 20th in the afternoon. Please mark your calendars and the portal notice will go out at a later date.
100 Day is on Tuesday, February 27th.  As a primary department we have decided to try something new and are asking the children to wear their collections!  (Just realized I have not told the students about this yet - whoops!)  For example - they could make and wear a bracelet or necklace with 100 beads, wear 100 hair elastics or clips, wear a hat/shirt with 100 ? pinned on.  We will be having a parade and a 100 day sing-along so everyone can share and see the many different creative ideas!  We will send out more information later but wanted to give you the heads up so you can start thinking!

Valentine's Day is coming up next month - I had a parent request for the names so below is a list of all Div. 9's students.  Please remember it is important if your child is handing out valentines that they include everyone in the class.  Thanks for your support with this.

January 12, 2018

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break.  It sounded like you all had an exciting Christmas and some fun family time. We have made it through our first long week - everyone including myself have been tired as it is so hard to get back into routine! For that reason January doesn't have many special events or field trips as you can see from the blog calendar.

Tuesday,  January 16th is Hot Chocolate Day!  The PAC will be providing hot chocolate for all students.  Please send in a mug (labelled with your child's name) on Tuesday so that this special day is environmentally friendly!  Thank you in advance for doing this for Fairview!  Hot lunch order forms also came. home today for a hot dog/sushi lunch on Tuesday, Jan. 30th.

Some students have not yet brought in their own earbuds/headphones (dollar store are fine).   Could you please send some in (in a labelled plastic bag) as soon as possible as we do use them for Reader's Workshop, Math and computer.  Thanks to everyone who already sent them in.  Also with this rainy weather please ensure your child has inside shoes an an extra set of clothes in case of accidents.

I am coaching girls basketball every Tuesday (game day) and Friday after school so if you are running a bit late either of those days your child will be in the office so they can be properly supervised.
