Oct. 27th, 2017

We have a new student, Craven! Div. 9 have been very kind and welcoming, I am very proud of them all!

Our skating field trip on Tuesday was a success and fun was had by all!   Thanks to all the parents that drove and helped out with skates.  We wouldn't be able to go without all your help!

Just right reading (JRR) book bags came home on Wednesday, hopefully you got the letter and bag. If not please let me know.  I have also reminded the class they need to bring these book daily. Not all students have their Reader's Workshop books yet, as they don't get them until they have been at the Book Club station with me.  Everyone will have them by Tuesday (usually they have the books for a couple of weeks (2 rotations) but being these are all Halloween related books we are only doing one rotation).  Thank you to Kamryn and Vienna's moms (Miranda and Nancy) for volunteering to help out with our Reader's Workshop each morning - your help is so appreciated!

Tuesday is Halloween and our celebration.  There will be a parade at 8:45 am.  ***WE WILL NOT BE DOING PLANNERS THAT DAY - everyone will be out trick-or-treating so I didn't think it made sense to bring home a book!  Please ensure that your child's costume is easy to take on and off as they are going out for recess and lunch, plus Div. 9 has a 40 minute gym class.  You won't want their costume to be ruined for Halloween night.  Thanks to the students for providing the snacks and goodies for our party.  Alanna - fruit plate, Ava - veggie plate, Steve - cheese/crackers or small sandwiches, Ben - sweet treat, Troy - popcorn/chips or pretzels, Sienna - ?.
***Please remember no peanuts.
Please be sure to still send a lunch as we won't be having our celebration until the afternoon.

Field trip to Fort Langley on Friday, Nov. 17th is now on the portal.  Thanks to everyone who has already signed up ad sent in the money.

Our Great Canadians start on Thursday, Nov. 2 so hopefully everyone has started at least thinking about these and checking their child's date.

During Explorations the students have been doing 'Holman Wang' style art with puppets and one single word.  Their work is creative as you can see from just a few of their pictures!

October 20th

A short but busy week!   We were very lucky to have a special guest on Thursday.  Shannon (a friend of Logan's Mom from Div. 8) came to our class and brought a large container of all the felt crafts she has created.  She explained how she made all of her different characters and even made it possible for each student to try to poke the yarn (similar to Holman Wang's creations).  Amazing to see and hear how an artist gets and creates their ideas.

Each child should have brought home their Great Canadian information sheets and soon to be Canadian flags.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Sorry for the bad news but our class does have a case of lice.  Please be checking your child's hair regularly and alert the school if and when you find anything.  Unfortunately,  it's that time of year!

Our skating field trip is on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 24th). Please sign up on the portal if you haven't already done so, ensure that you send your child's booster seat, skates and appropriate clothes and also send in the money if renting skates and helmets.  We will be leaving immediately after lunch.  Thank you so much to all the parents who have signed up to drive and confirmed their driver's abstracts.  Please don't worry if your child is also in cross country - there will be time to get to the race afterwards - Mrs. Roberts and I are coaches so we too will be leaving after we get back from skating.

Our Halloween celebration will be on Tuesday, Oct. 31st.  Your child can wear a costume but please remember it needs to be easy to take on and off as they will be going outside at recess and lunch and will even have gym that day.  You wouldn't want their costume to be ruined for Halloween night.  Thanks in advance to the following families for providing the snacks and goodies for our party.
Alanna - fruit plate,   Ava - Veggie Plate,  Steve - cheese/crackers or small sandwiches, Ben - sweet treat, Troy - popcorn/chips or pretzels, Sienna - other.  Please be sure to still send a lunch that day as we don't have our celebration until the afternoon.

Friday the 13th of October!

Div. 9 had a lucky day!  The weather was perfect for our field trip to the Public Library to see and hear the author and creator/artist  Holman Wang. Thanks to Roman's grandma, Vienna, Kamryn and Ben's moms for joining us for this trip.  The students liked the bus trip plus really enjoyed learning Mr. Wang's journey to become an author and how he makes all the characters in his board books.  Ask your child about their field trip - when we brainstormed this afternoon they were very excited to share.  Prior to the field trip we had looked at the videos on the link below which explains the process he uses to make all his characters.  https://www.amazon.com/Holman-Wang/e/B009F0HJD2

We are hoping to do some kind of art project using some of his ideas so if anyone has any yarn that  can be donated to the class that would be really appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

This past week was fire safety week and all the students were sent home information from the fire department which hopefully you have discussed and made your home escape plan.  We also read a couple stories today and discussed the importance of knowing and being able to repeat their addresses.  Please practice this with your child because if an emergency did occur they need to be prepared.

Div. 9 has 3 upcoming field trips planned so please keep these dates open on your calendars.
Tuesday, Oct. 24th pm - skating at Planet Ice (form should be up on the portal soon  - it has been submitted)
Friday, Nov. 17th - Fort Langley
Friday, Dec. 15th - Burnaby Village Museum

October 6, 2017

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Hope you have a wonderful weekend and that the cute turkeys that your children made will be enjoyed as a special Thanksgiving centre piece!  Please have your child share with you their 'Perfect Thanksgiving' story!  They were asked to create these and anything was possible but many choose and felt they like their Thanksgiving just the way they are!

Please sign up on the portal for our field trip next Friday, Oct. 13th and send in the $1.80 cash for bus fare by Wednesday.  Please do not pay on the portal as we need to pay the bus driver (if you have already done this don't worry we'll figure it out).  Thanks to the parents who have agreed to join us, it will make the walk and bus trip much more manageable with the extra help.

Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday and then on Tuesday it is hot lunch day thanks to our PAC.

Enjoy this long weekend with family and friends.
