January 25th

Thanks for assisting your child with the homework they had last weekend with the Place Value Scavenger Hunt.   Over the next couple of months we will continue to send a few of these home as it is an excellent review of place value.  Just so you know we do consider $3.48 as a 3 in the hundreds, 4 in the tens and 8 in the ones (we discussed this in class as it is a bit confusing) - we encourage the children to think of pennies as the ones, dimes as the tens and loonies as the hundreds.

Also just a reminder to keep a look out for your child's spelling book on Wednesday as they need to complete both sides of their lesson.  If you know that Wednesday isn't a good night to do home work just ask your child to bring it home on Monday or Tuesday.  It's just important that they have it completed before Thursday so they can practice their words for Friday.  Thanks!

A notice about head lice screening went home this week.  You were only suppose to return the form if you did not want your child to participate.  Many people however were confused and returned it anyways so if you did return your form but did not circle the NO your child WILL participate in the screening.  I was notified that a student in Div. 9 was found with nits just yesterday so I am really hope that you are all okay with the screening.  Thanks to our PAC for providing this service.

Yesterday we read an amazing book called 'The Invisible Boy', have your child talk about it with you.  We talked about whether they have ever felt invisible like Brian did.  In the afternoon we created a scene of compassion with loose parts.  Below are just a couple of the great creations!
We are using this book as the launch into our compassion unit that we will soon be starting in the library with Mrs. Neufeld and also Mrs. Roberts' class.

Scholastic is due on Monday.  Many students said they still hoped to purchase books so I extended the deadline.

Today Dan (the recycling man) came to our class and did a very interesting presentation on 2 Canadian animals that live near us.  Ask your child about this and all that they learned.  Below are a couple of pictures - as you can see it was exciting and engaging for the students.

Just a reminder there is no school tomorrow for students.   Hope you have a good long weekend.

January 19th

Spelling has started this week.  You should have received a letter on white paper explaining our spelling program.  As you hopefully have noticed the children write their list of words in their planner on Monday.  If by Wednesday they have not completed the lesson that accompanies each word list they will be bringing it home for homework.  We thought this way you can finish up the assignment on Wednesday and then practice and study the words on Thursday so they are ready for the quiz on Friday.  I will only be giving them 5 words from the list and then 1/2 bonus words which follow the same phonic sound that we are studying.  On the blog I have also added to our useful links - Spelling City.  On this website I have added our list words and there are a variety of activities and games that the students can play using each week's words.  ***Just a note that next week we will have the quiz on Thursday as Friday, Jan. 26th is a pro d day and there is no school for students.

In their poetry book this weekend we have included a place value scavenger hunt.  If you could help your child to complete this for Monday that would be great!  Thanks.

New Just Right Reading came home this week.  Please help your child remember that they need to bring their JRR to school every day as we often use them.  Thanks.  Also could everyone please check their homes for any classroom books - it seems that many are not making it back or even out of the backpacks.

Scholastic was sent home today.  Please remember I can not accept cash.  Please make cheques out to Scholastic or pay on-line.

We have one more skating booked for Tuesday, February 20th in the afternoon. Please mark your calendars and the portal notice will go out at a later date.
100 Day is on Tuesday, February 27th.  As a primary department we have decided to try something new and are asking the children to wear their collections!  (Just realized I have not told the students about this yet - whoops!)  For example - they could make and wear a bracelet or necklace with 100 beads, wear 100 hair elastics or clips, wear a hat/shirt with 100 ? pinned on.  We will be having a parade and a 100 day sing-along so everyone can share and see the many different creative ideas!  We will send out more information later but wanted to give you the heads up so you can start thinking!

Valentine's Day is coming up next month - I had a parent request for the names so below is a list of all Div. 9's students.  Please remember it is important if your child is handing out valentines that they include everyone in the class.  Thanks for your support with this.

January 12, 2018

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break.  It sounded like you all had an exciting Christmas and some fun family time. We have made it through our first long week - everyone including myself have been tired as it is so hard to get back into routine! For that reason January doesn't have many special events or field trips as you can see from the blog calendar.

Tuesday,  January 16th is Hot Chocolate Day!  The PAC will be providing hot chocolate for all students.  Please send in a mug (labelled with your child's name) on Tuesday so that this special day is environmentally friendly!  Thank you in advance for doing this for Fairview!  Hot lunch order forms also came. home today for a hot dog/sushi lunch on Tuesday, Jan. 30th.

Some students have not yet brought in their own earbuds/headphones (dollar store are fine).   Could you please send some in (in a labelled plastic bag) as soon as possible as we do use them for Reader's Workshop, Math and computer.  Thanks to everyone who already sent them in.  Also with this rainy weather please ensure your child has inside shoes an an extra set of clothes in case of accidents.

I am coaching girls basketball every Tuesday (game day) and Friday after school so if you are running a bit late either of those days your child will be in the office so they can be properly supervised.

December 22nd

Thanks to all the parents who drove and helped out with skating.  The fact it was snowing just made it even more exciting!

The children loved the snow and ice and had very creative ideas of what they could do!

Thanks to those parents that sent in snacks and treats today for our celebration. Also thanks to everyone for the neat and generous gifts and Christmas wishes.  I hope you and your families have a wonderful holiday season!
Strange to say but we will see you in 2018!

Dec. 15th

It was a busy 'Christmas' week at Fairview.  We hope you liked the concert I thought Div. 8 & 9
did an excellent job of 'Zat you Santa Claus'!

We have been busy with some Christmas crafts, Christmas math games and even Christmas
explorations!  At Explorations they are creating 'The Polar Express' with the train set and then
a North Pole station which they can create whatever they'd like.  Below are a few pictures of
their creations.

Look we made 'The Polar Express'!

Christmas card art orders came in and were sent home on Thursday.

Our field trip to Burnaby Village was very successful   Thank you so much to all the parents who drove
and helped with the supervising. Even the staff at Burnaby Village commented on how fortunate
we were to have so many volunteers!  You're the Best! I think the children learned a lot about how
Christmas and life was many years ago.  They were asking some great questions!

This last week before the break Fairview Leadership is collecting new and gently used warm clothing
and towels and blankets for the  SPCA.  Please send any donations in with your child, we have boxes
outside each classroom.

Tuesday, Dec. 19th is hot lunch and skating in the afternoon.  Thanks to everyone who volunteered
to drive and help out!  You will need to send boosters and all their skating gear on Tuesday morning.
Please send in the money for skates and helmets on Monday so that I can organize it all after school.

Pajama and bring your favourite Christmas book is Friday!  Treats for our celebration on Friday, Dec. 22
afternoon are provided by the following...
Alexis - fruit plate, Jerome - veggie plate, Mannat - cheese/crackers or small sandwiches,
Kamryn - sweet treat, Jared - popcorn/chips or pretzels, Josh - Grinch Kabobs.  Thank you all!

Excitement is definitely in the air! Christmas concert tickets that were pre-ordered went home today with the oldest child attending Fairview (if you wanted tickets and didn’t order any please check the parent portal and contact Natalie Currie by email)

Concert reminders…
Costume - pajamas and a Santa Hat (only if you want them to have one – if you are sending one please label it with your child’s name with masking tape on the inside) Sorry for the late notice but one of the student’s suggested it and we thought it was a cute idea!
Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 9:00 dress rehearsal ***Students should come to school in pj’s
Evening performance at 6:30 that day ***we are asking the children to arrive at their classrooms at 6:15 pm so please have them stay with you until that time!
Wednesday, Dec. 13 1:00 pm performance

Div.9 has now finished all their great Canadians. I was very proud of how well all of the students did. Public speaking is not easy and all of them did an awesome job!  The posters all look great in the hall too and will be an important addition to their memory books.

You should have received your copy of your child’s report card on Tuesday.  If for some reason you didn’t get it please let me know.

Our field trip to Burnaby Museum is on Friday, Dec. 15th.  Thanks to everyone who volunteered to join us.  It should be a great day!  Please send in the $9.00 asap.

Skating is on Tuesday, Dec. 19 afternoon after hot lunch! Another exciting day!

Our Christmas celebration will be on Friday, Dec. 22.  Thanks to the following students for supplying the goodies and snacks.

Your child may have mentioned that I didn’t come back after lunch today. Unfortunately, my mom isn’t well and I had to suddenly book a flight to Calgary. I am actually writing this as I am flying over the rockies! I really hope to be back for Monday but I may to need to stay longer.  Hope you all have a great weekend.  Sheralyn

December 2nd

Thanks to everyone for attending your child's conference these last couple of days.  It was great to see everyone, to celebrate your child's work and learning so far this year and to set goals for our next term.

It's so hard to believe it is already December!  It will be a fun but busy month.  I have updated the calendar on this blog with all the important dates for class and school wide events.

Our concert is coming up quickly and you've probably heard your child singing their songs.  We will be wearing pyjamas for our costume. They will need to wear them on Tuesday, Dec. 12 in the morning for the dress rehearsal, again that evening (the concert is at 6:30pm) and then again for the afternoon performance on Wednesday, Dec. 13th (1:00pm).

We have two field trips planned for December. Friday, Dec. 15th to Burnaby Village Museum and then skating at Planet Ice on Tuesday, Dec. 19th.  Both of these trips are on the portal so please sign up asap.  Thanks to everyone who already has and also to everyone who has signed up to drive.  Please ensure you have a current driver's abstract on file in the office.  If you are uncertain please contact Joy in the office (604-465-9331) or just write a note in your child's planner and I will send home the volunteer form with all the directions (it is very quick and easy now as it can be done online or over the phone).

The last day of school before the break will be our classroom celebration. I will post the reminder notice to all parents who are bringing in snacks closer to the date.

Enjoy your weekend - it looks like we may see some sun next week!
