May 25th

A short but very busy week...

We had a fantastic day at Grouse Mountain!  Thank you to Ava, Jerome, Jared, Rachel, Kamryn, Josh and Ben's parents who joined us and helped out! 

We also really enjoyed Michael Mitchel you came to Fairview on Wednesday.  The students loved many of his songs but Canada in My Pocket is still definitely the favourite (they even sang it to the Grizzly Bear today in hopes that he'd wake up!)

Our Scientist this week were Vienna and Cody!  Ask your child about elephant toothpaste and what makes an egg float!

Upcoming reminders...

On Wednesday we will once again be changing our Mystery Reading Bags.  Please ensure that your child brings it to school and that all 5 books are in the bag.  Thanks!

Div. 8 &9 will be hosting a bake sale on Thursday, May 31st.  As part of our compassion unit, we are trying to raise money for a 'buddy bench'.  This is a place where students can go if they can't find anyone to play with so that they can connect with other students who are in the same situation.  We would really appreciate if everyone could send in 1-2 dozen treats for us to sell that day.  We also need parent volunteers to help set up at 9:30 and sell during recess (9:50- 10:25) and lunch (11:45 - 12:30).  Could you please email me to let me know if you can help out - sheralyn_rowledge@sd42.ca Thanks in advance for all your help with this special project.

We have booked a compost visit with Dan from Ridge Meadows recycling on June 4th and a field trip to the recycling depot on Friday, June 8th (9:15 start - drivers will be needed Please and Thank You!) a notice has been sent home on the parent portal.  There is no cost for either activity.

May 18th

I hope you all have a fantastic long weekend!  Remember it is extra long as there is no school on Tuesday for students due to a Professional Development Day.

Tomorrow is our 'Walk For Water' event. If you have any 4L milk jugs please send them in.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and is wearing comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen.  They also should bring a water bottle so they can stop in for a quick drink before our second lap.  All donations sent in before or the day of the event will be given to Haiti to provide clean water - $25 provides water for one person for a lifetime!  Hopefully Fairview can make a difference in several people's lives.

Our Scientist this week were Jared, Ava, Rachel and Kamryn.  We learned about dynamic water, how yeast can inflate (or start to inflate a balloon - unfortunately this didn't work as well as it did at home even though we tried it twice! - that's science!) and volcanoes.  It was great to highlight the current volcano in Hawaii to make it more relevant. Please remember to check your child's date and practice reading the experiment at home so they are ready to present.  So far everyone has done a great job!

Thanks for sending in mystery bags on Wednesday.  Most students were able to draw a name for a new book bag and seem very excited about their new books.  If your child forgot theirs, please send in asap so they can get a new set of books.

Our field trip to Grouse Mountain is next Friday.  All students must be signed up/paid for by May 23rd so that we can make alternate arrangements for those not attending.  Thanks and a big thank you to all 8 of our parent volunteers.    Also a reminder to please pay the$10 for your child's memory books if you haven't already done so, this can be done via the parent portal or by cash/cheque.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Mother's Day weekend and that all the mom's get totally spoiled - you deserve it!!  The children were very proud of their special present that they made for you.

We had our last spelling quiz today but remember they can still visit Spelling City to review and maintain their skills (especially lessons 6 - 12 as these phonetic rules are more challenging and many they just need to keep practicing to memorize).

Thanks to our scientists this week Teresa, Liberty and Sienna we learned about Rainbow Milk, lava lamps and Black Fire Snake.  Ask your child about what happened in these experiments.

Treat Days are coming up on Tuesday, May 14th and Wednesday, May 15th.  Please remember to send in $1 or $2  if you want  your child to participate.

Mystery Bags seem to be very popular with the students and will be changed next Wednesday.  I would appreciate any feedback from parents.  How do they compare to the JRR bags?

Field trip is coming up quickly please be sure to sign up and pay online or send in the $ asap.
We do have 8 parent volunteers and 6 of those are covered within our cost and have room on the bus. Therefore,  if anyone would prefer not to attend please let me know and if everyone one is still interested we will organize the cost and which parents will join us on the bus.  Thanks for all your support.

Our last Scholastic for the year was sent home this week.  Please return any orders by Tuesday.
Thanks to Cody, Josh,  Liberty and Kamryn's mom for organizing our Scholastic this year!  Your help has been very appreciated.

The leadership group is organizing our "Walk for Water'.  They are asking for 4 L milk jugs to be sent in - please rinse the jugs well with soapy water before you send them in.  Thanks.  The Walk is on Friday, May 18th in the afternoon.  Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be dressed for the weather.  Donations (loonies or townies are great) and will be accepted up until this date.  Money collected will be donated to Haiti.  On Friday morning we will be watching some informational videos provided by Mrs. Valouch so that the students understand how fortunate we are to have access to clean fresh water simply by turning on a tap!

Lesson 12 will be our last spelling unit, it is a review so we will do it over 2 weeks.  Don't forget the link to Spelling City even when we are no longer doing spelling in the class as it would be a great way to have your child review their skills.  Hopefully your child has brought their Scientist of the week information as we will be starting next week.  All the children are very excited to be a scientist but if any of you have any questions please just let me know.

Decades Day' is on May 8th.  Students can dress up as any decade if they would like to participate.

We started our new 'Mystery Bag' reading program on Thursday.  Students received a bag with 5 books of varying levels.  The idea is that some will be read independently and some will be read with/by parents.  There is a sheet in each bag with some helpful hints on reading with your child.  If your child is an emergent reader and you would like an additional bag of books that are at their reading level, please email me and I will send one home.  Guided reading books will be sent home from now on in their planner bags.  All book bags will be changed once every two weeks and we ask that your child keeps them in his/her backpack so we may also enjoy them at school.  These are all brand new books that we are very lucky to have so please take really good care of these so that they will last!  

Our leadership group is also organizing a 'Walk for Water' event on May 18th.  Each student will need to bring in an empty 1 Litre jug for this event (plastic only, please)  Thank you!   

Finally, just a reminder to please sign your child up for the Grouse Mountain field trip and to pay the $10 for the memory book if you have not already done so. Cheques can be made out to Fairview Elementary.    Thanks!

April 27/18

Just a reminder that Monday, April 30th is a pro-d day so there is no school for students.

Thanks to everyone who has already paid for their memory books.  If you haven't please do so either online or send in cash/cheque.  Our field trip to Grouse on Friday, May 25th is also on the portal.  We do need 5 volunteers to join us that day so please indicate if you are available.  Thanks in advance, it should be a really fun day.

If you could please send in cereal boxes next week as we need them for a craft.  Also if you have any craft materials you are not using Div. 9 would appreciate them.  The children love to create!

Mystery reading book bags will soon be coming home! The students are very excited about these new books. Please help your child remember to return these daily in the ziplock bag.  Unfortunately we have had a couple of water bottle spills lately and if books are in the ziplock they will hopefully stay dry!  

It's so nice that spring has finally arrived!  With the nice weather sandals and flip flops are a popular footwear but we are often active so please ensure that your child also has runners and socks in their backpacks. 

Our bulletin board for the 'Earth Day Green Paint Contest'!  Thank you to Mrs. Carpenter and Mrs. Shimmin for their help to construct this.  We actually won for the primary divisions - good work Div. 9!

April 20th

It is so nice to see the sunshine the last couple of days!  With our improving weather (hopefully) we have told the students that starting Monday that they will be going outside rain or shine for recess and lunch. When I was on supervision on Monday all three of the kindergarten classes were outside so we talked and said if they can do it so can we! Our district has adopted a 'west coast' policy which means students need to come prepared to go outside under any conditions (except lighting where is a safety issue).   I feel they need the exercise and fresh air.  Please send in an extra change of clothes for your child in case of accidents.  Thanks!

For Earth Day we had several different and fun activities.  We did a Recycling Relay with Dan from Recycling, made paper (also with Dan), and our reuse challenge of making shoes!  Thank you to everyone who sent in newspapers.  Below are some pictures from our day!

Reminder that Monday is class photo day.  I am suppose to be going to a workshop that day so if there is enough TTOC I will be away but we are hoping to arrange so that our classes can be first to get our pictures done.  

There are still a few students who have not returned their Health Talk forms (pink) next week.  Your child will only be able to participate with your permission.

Please go to the portal for our memory books and either pay online or send in the $10.00.Thank you!

Our field trip to Grouse Mountain is coming up on May 25th.  Ms Roberts and I are meeting next week to submit the permission on the portal.  This is a bus trip so there will be a limited number of parent volunteers.

April 13th

Friday the 13th!  We made it and had a pretty good day!

Thanks to the parent or grandparent of Jared, Jerome, Kamryn, Libby, Ava, Vienna, Sienna's who drove and helped out with our field trip on Tuesday afternoon.  Margriet Ruuss is an amazing author! We all enjoyed her presentation, her books and her creative ideas and methods to writing and making books.  If you haven't had a chance please talk to your child about their afternoon.

Jump Rope was a big success - lots of great skipping, lots and fun and hopefully Fairview is raising a lot of money for such a special cause!  Pledges and donations will be accepted until the end of next week.

Our PAC are having Treat Days next Tuesday and Wednesday. Bring your loonies and twoonies.  Thursday is Jersey Day and Friday we will be celebrating Earth Day. Dress appropriately for the weather   Scholastic is also due on Friday.  Class Photo day is Monday, April 23rd.

You should have a received a pink note about Sexual Health and Personal Safety presentation that is taking place on Thursday April 26th.  Please sign and return the bottom of this form if you want your child to attend.

You hopefully have received a portal notice about our memory book charge of $10.00.  Please pay asap.

PLEASE REMIND YOUR CHILD TO BE NOTICING ACTS OF COMPASSION OR TIMES WHEN THEY THINK SOMEONE NEEDS COMPASSION this weekend.  As part of our unit we have asked them to try to be noticing at Fairview and the outside world.

Just to let you that Libby's mom has offered to return any public library books in the next couple of weeks.  If you'd rather send them to the school to be returned just make sure to write a note and tell your child so we make sure they get put in the right bin and returned to the right place!  Thanks Jackie!
